Truck Crossing Sign: Meaning and What to Do

The yellow diamond reading TRUCK CROSSING warns that trucks enter or cross the road ahead, typically from a quarry, plant, warehouse, or construction access that lets heavy vehicles onto the highway. A symbol version with a truck silhouette says the same thing.

  • Yellow with black legend
  • Warning sign

A loaded truck pulling out from a stop takes a long time to reach road speed and a long distance to stop. Meeting one broadside at highway speed is the crash the sign is there to prevent, and dust or mud on the road near the crossing is a second hazard the sign implies.

What to do

What to do when you see the truck crossing sign

Slow, look for trucks waiting at the crossing or already entering, and be ready to stop. Do not pass near the crossing. If a truck is pulling out ahead of you, give it room to accelerate rather than closing in; expect debris on the pavement and loose material dropped from loads.

The signs it is confused with

Tests contrast it with the white No Trucks regulatory sign, which prohibits trucks, and with the Truck Route sign, which directs them. Yellow means warning: trucks are not banned here, they are expected.
