State Route Sign: Meaning and What to Do

The white circle with a black number on a black square is the national default design for a state route marker. Many states use their own shape instead, such as an outline of the state or a distinctive emblem, but the circle is what the standard specifies where a state has not adopted one. The design shown carries an example number.

A state route is a road numbered and maintained by the state highway agency. It can be anything from a mountain road to a freeway. The marker identifies the route so drivers can follow it through junctions; the road's rules come from its other signs.

What to do

What to do when you see the state route sign

Follow the marker and its direction plaques through intersections where routes join or split. As with a U.S. route, judge the road by what you see, since a state route marker says nothing about whether the road has cross traffic, signals, or limited access.

The signs it is confused with

Tests ask you to tell the three route markers apart: red and blue shield for Interstate, white shield for U.S. route, and circle or state-specific shape for state route. A county route uses a blue pentagon with yellow legend.

The road is a state route with the number shown. States may use their own shape instead of the circle, but the meaning is the same.

How does this sign appear on the written test?

As the third choice in route-marker questions, alongside the Interstate and U.S. route shields.
