One Way Sign: Meaning and What to Do

The black rectangle with a white arrow reading ONE WAY tells you the only direction traffic may travel on the street it marks. Every lane of that roadway moves the way the arrow points, and entering against it is the wrong-way violation the red signs exist to catch.

  • MUTCD R6-1
  • Horizontal rectangle with arrow
  • Black with white arrow and legend
  • Regulatory sign

One-way streets change several habits at once: you may turn into them only in the arrow's direction, left turns onto them from another one-way street are often allowed on red where state law permits, and the leftmost lane is a real travel lane rather than oncoming territory.

What to do

What to do when you see the one way sign

Enter and travel only in the direction of the arrow. Before turning onto any street downtown, look for the sign at the intersection; the absence of oncoming traffic is a clue, but the sign is the rule. If you find yourself against the arrow, treat it like any wrong-way recovery: stop, hazards, turn around.

The signs it is confused with

Tests contrast it with the Two-Way Traffic warning diamond that marks the end of one-way conditions, and with Divided Highway signs, where each side is one-way but the road as a whole is not. The horizontal arrow rectangle at an intersection is the definitive marker.

Questions

Questions about the one way sign

What does a one way sign mean?

All traffic on the marked street moves in the direction of the arrow. You may enter it only in that direction, and every lane, including the leftmost, flows the same way.

Can I turn left onto a one-way street at a red light?

In many states, yes, from a one-way street onto a one-way street moving left, after a complete stop, unless a sign prohibits it. Each state words this rule its own way, and its own practice test reflects it.

How do I know a street is one-way?

The One Way arrow signs at its intersections, plus supporting clues: all parked cars facing the same direction, signals and signs facing one way, and no yellow center line.

What happens if I enter a one-way street the wrong way?

Stop as soon as you recognize it, use your hazard lights, and turn around or back out. The violation matters less than the recovery; oncoming drivers do not expect you.

How is the one way sign tested?

As sign identification and inside intersection scenarios, especially turns onto one-way streets and the red-light left-turn rule where the state allows it.
