No Outlet Sign: Meaning and What to Do

The yellow diamond reading NO OUTLET warns that the street ahead, and every street it connects to, has no exit to another road. Whatever route you take inside, you will leave the same way you entered. It is posted at the entrance to neighborhoods and loops that do not go through.

  • Diamond
  • Yellow with black legend
  • Warning sign

The sign saves drivers from exploring a maze of residential streets looking for a way through, and it saves the neighborhood from the traffic that would do so. Unlike Dead End, the road ahead may continue and branch; it simply does not lead anywhere else.

What to do

What to do when you see the no outlet sign

If you are looking for a way through to another road, turn off before entering. If your destination is inside, drive in at residential speed and expect the loop to bring you back to this point. Watch for children, cyclists, and parked cars, as on any quiet street.

The signs it is confused with

Tests pair it with Dead End, the same idea for a single street that stops. Both are yellow diamonds with words only; the question is whether the driver knows that No Outlet describes a network rather than a road end.

Questions

Questions about the no outlet sign

What does the no outlet sign mean?

The streets ahead do not connect to any other road. You will have to come back out the way you went in.

Is no outlet the same as dead end?

Not quite. A dead-end street stops. A no-outlet area may have many streets that continue and loop, but none of them leads out.

Why post it at the entrance?

So drivers looking for a through route turn away before entering, which keeps cut-through traffic out of residential streets.

Is it safe to drive into a no-outlet neighborhood?

Yes, if your destination is there. Drive slowly and expect residential hazards; the sign describes the road network, not a danger.

How does this sign appear on the written test?

As the pair with Dead End, asking which sign describes a single street ending and which describes an area with no through road.
